THE BENEFITS OF TOYOTA SAFETY SENSEOVERVIEW

Toyota Makes Safety Sense Standard on Many New 2017 Models

Knowing that your vehicle has your back is always a good feeling, and that’s exactly what you’ll experience with Toyota Safety Sense. Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) for compact cars (TSS-C) and mid- to large-size vehicles (TSS-P) was designed to keep drivers, passengers, and pedestrians out of harm’s way. These packages bring you peace of mind every time you hit the road. Through Safety Sense, a driver’s awareness is heightened, while vehicle operation and decision-making skills are also improved. The best part? It comes standard on all new Toyota models. There are five main elements to Toyota Safety Sense:

Pre-Collision System (PCS)

With the help of an in-vehicle camera, Pre-Collision System (PCS) for TSS-C and TSS-P helps you to avoid or mitigate frontal collisions by sensing straight-ahead vehicles. If a collision with the vehicle ahead of you is imminent, based on your distance and the speed at which you’re approaching, PCS will visually and audibly notify you, encouraging you to quickly apply the brakes. Integrated Brake Assist helps to apply the maximum amount of brake force necessary during a sudden, emergency stop, increasing the chances of avoiding an accident. If you don’t act in time, PCS can apply the brakes on your behalf.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

Operational at speeds of 32 mph and above, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) is an intuitive piece of safety technology that helps you stay in your lane, and is standard for Toyota compact, midsize, and sports utility vehicles alike. LDA senses when your vehicle begins to drift without an activated turn signal, and alerts you with visual and audio warnings. This gives you the opportunity to check your surroundings, and safely steer your vehicle back into its lane. Toyota vehicles with TSS-P and Electronic Power Steering also include Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), which can automatically correct your course.

Automatic High Beams (AHB)

A staple in TSS-C and TSS-P, Automatic High Beams (AHB) functions at speeds of 25 mph or higher, and works to illuminate the roads ahead. During nighttime travel, AHB uses a built-in camera to scan for the headlights and taillights of other vehicles on the road. This allows AHB to intelligently alternate between high beams and low beams, giving you the best possible view without temporarily blinding other drivers. For example, on a busy Savannah roadway, the system may use high beams for easier obstacle detection, and then switch to low beams when an oncoming vehicle is fast approaching.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Function (PCS w/PD)

With TSS-P, PCS can, in some situations, use its built-in, forward-facing camera and millimeter-wave radar to spot pedestrians straight ahead of your vehicle. Whether the pedestrian is detectable to PCS depends largely on the person’s profile, posture, and size, as well as the brightness and angle at which they’re perceived. If a pedestrian is detected and a collision seems likely, PCS will alert you with visual and audible warnings, giving you time to react and brake. Like the standard PCS, PCS w/ PD can brake automatically if you’re unable to react immediately.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)

Toyota vehicles armed with TSS-P offer Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – an intelligent cruise control system that operates at speeds of 25 to 110 mph, and adds to driving enjoyment and safety. As well as maintaining a preset speed on roadways, this system can control the distance between you and a straight-ahead vehicle by automatically adjusting your speed within a specific range. It monitors distance using a built-in camera and front grille-integrated millimeter-wave radar. When a significant drop in speed is required to maintain a preset vehicle-to-vehicle distance, DRCC can apply the brakes autonomously.
